About

My full bio is available on my web site.

I arrived in Mount Vernon, NY as a toddler from rural North Carolina. I became the Mount Vernon City Historian after many achievements in the study of history, including my doctoral work at SUNY Stony Brook in 1983. I taught history at the Mount Vernon High School and was an administrator in several positions including Multicultural Coordinator, History Standards Administrator, and Principal of the Mount Vernon High School (from which I graduated in 1967). Before retiring, I was also the Principal of the Wyandanch Memorial High School.

You will be able to keep up with my adventures since I have retired here in this blog.

Dear Dr. Spruill – I have been trying to catch up with you for at least 2 years now!

I hope that you remember me (Henry May’s daughter) – I’ve been pretty busy as of late: I won a grant and brought a music festival into the city of Mt. Vernon and its school system this year, and I’ve been collecting historic memorabilia on the City for at least 3 years now (I have to say I owe my curiosity on Mt. V to you based on your scholarly works)

I can’t wait to learn more about your work on the history trail, and to read your new book! There’s a new acting director at the Library, and she is gung-ho about getting the local history room in some semblance of order. Our first meeting is June 14th at 7pm if you are in the NY area at that time, otherwise, I hope that you will write me back and we can correspond via the net – Your presence is sorely missed!

    Dear Dr. Spruill,

I hope this finds you well. My name is Rebekah Collinsworth, and I am the editor of New York titles for Arcadia Publishing. It’s been difficult trying to find you, I understand the community is going though a lot of changes right now. But someone in the Mayor’s office gave me your name. I was hoping to speak with you about the possibilities of doing a book on Mount Vernnon. I am beginning to look for an interested and qualified author, and want to begin by speaking with you.

Arcadia Publishing is not a vanity press. As a trade publisher, Arcadia covers all costs involved in publishing and selling the books. The author’s only responsibility is the submission of a completed manuscript.

If you have any questions regarding either our publishing process, terms of agreement, or royalties please feel free to e-mail me.

    Best,

    Rebekah Collinsworth

I have been trying to touch base with you since I have moved to Baltimore. I am so excited to see that you have retired and can pursue those things that are truly your passion. I hope this post finds you and your family well.

    Grace & Peace

    Mr Spruill,
I am a professor at Rider University in NJ. My students are producing a documentary on the work of Flip Schulke. Flip donated his digital archive to Rider. We would love to get you on film talking about Flip and the impact of his work during the civil rights movement.
Would you be interested in this project?
